baby portraitsI think baby portraits are my favorites to do. These little ones couldn't be sweeter, and I love getting a really good portrait of a time of life that changes so fast. (I can't believe my baby is turning 3 already!) My normal sessions for babies vary depending on his or her age. Newborn sessions tend to take longer (2 - 4 hours), and sessions for 6 - 12 month olds are usually much shorter (30 - 60 minutes). If it's cold outside, young baby portraits are best done either at my home-studio or at your home. If it's warm out, baby portraits for any age are great inside or out. Please bring whatever props may be important to you & your child. Especially with babies and smaller children, I tend to involve parents in the pictures as a prop - so be prepared! Sometimes babies are the happiest when you're holding them. And usually my favorite portraits are the ones that show you interacting together. I charge my regular session fee and print prices for a baby portrait session. Or, my "Baby Expressions" plan offers 4 photo sessions throughout your baby's first year at a reduced price. The session fee is due within one week of booking your session to reserve your time. At your session, we will schedule an appointment to view the finished portraits, usually one to two weeks later. I can bring my ipad to your home, you can come to me, or we can meet at the park, Flying Star, the library, or wherever works for you. Please have everyone present that you need to make purchasing decisions, because you will choose your prints and collections at that time, and the total payment will be due. I can post an online gallery for family and friends to view also, after your initial purchase is made. It is always possible for you or other family members to purchase additional prints. I have some antique baby dresses - which were made by my great-grandmother - that you can use for some of your portraits if you would like. Depending on your baby's age, there are different things that make your baby session successful:
newborn portraits I recommend newborn portraits be done before the baby is 10 days old – that way he or she will still be sleepy and we can pose him/her in lots of cute ways. You can get very sweet newborn portraits with the baby awake, but it’s not the same – this is the only time that asleep is best for portraits! I use parents as a prop to hold the baby – so if you have a long sleeved black shirt, wear that and you will blend into the background. Then I can really emphasize the faces and skin. If you want pictures with the baby in other clothes too, you’re welcome to change. If you have any cute baby blankets that you like, or a special toy, or a hat, or shoes, etc., bring them! I’m happy to include changes of clothing with the baby. Babies usually only put up with one or two changes during a session. I like to do naked (or diapered) shots, then if you have any other cute outfits we’ll do as many as he or she will let us do. Newborn portrait sessions take the longest. Babies generally need to eat at some point during the session, and I do spend time with the baby getting them to sleep if possible. It's best to either start out feeding the baby at the beginning of your session, if this puts him or her to sleep, or start out on a full tummy (and hopefully asleep). Also if we're doing portraits at your home, it's best if you raise the temperature of your room a few degrees, so the baby can be comfortable with clothes off.
three month old portraits I think this age can be the hardest for baby portraits. The baby can smile, but doesn't always want to! Plan for an hour-long session, depending on the baby of course, and we can definitely include time for a meal if needed! I often find the babies are happiest when their mom or dad is holding them, so be prepared to be included in the portraits. This is a good age for naked or dressed pictures. I find babies' moods deteriorate with each change of clothing, so bring some options and we'll get to as much as we can. A special blanket, if you have one, is a great prop to include, along with a special toy or other prop.
six to nine month old portraits Now that your baby can sit up, we have more options for poses, and can sometimes even have lots of fun with crawling! I love to show off Baby's accomplishments. Babies have an easier time smiling and interacting, and are usually more flexible with clothing changes too. These sessions tend to be fun and creative - it's a great age to do outdoor portraits.
one year old portraits This can be a good time to do some more formal portraits, to celebrate your baby's birthday. I also love birthday cake sessions - it's so fun to see them enjoy their special treat! We can combine both of these and do regular portraits first, and then break out the cake. (For cake sessions - I don't recommend red frosting :) and it's sometimes helpful if they've had cake already at least once before.) Many babies can walk by this time, which of course is wonderful, but sometimes it means they are moving away quickly. In this case I (again) tend to use a parent to keep them in one area, so be prepared to be in the picture.
